Rainbow Snippets August 30th, 2020

Who else has a tough time believing it’s the end of August? As I was working Friday I kept doing the mid-August files…and had to remind myself no, this is month-end! Crazy.

The kittens are all checked out and good. They are swatting and hissing amongst themselves now and we are just letting them fight it out (to an extent). Policing is exhausting and these are siblings…they just need to be reminded.

As for the story, let’s continue with this first memorable interaction of Erik and Asher.

Here’s my snippet for the week:

Blurb:

Wannabe singer and band front man Erik Von Nordgren hates snarky brit Asher Berkley with a passion. From the moment he turns up at practice with his twin sister Daisy, who is one of the band the two have hated each other.
Through a series of ‘tit for tat’ incidents they annoy, frustrate and exasperated each other. The die hard goth with purple eyes and the hard core rocker with dreams of the big time have nothing in common and no need to cross paths. Except to wind each other up.
Until the day that Erik throws Asher in the school pool, when everything begins to change. Erik is so far in closet he’s in Narnia and Asher has a dark past and trust issues that stand in the way of any relationship, let alone one with the brash American who hurts him every time they try to get together.
A relationship doomed from the start, or so you’d think.

Erik touched her arm. “What is it, Daisy?” She pointed to the pale kid and made a fist at him. “It’s my brother. He’s playing with your toys.”

She gave Asher a look like no other, one he hoped never to see aimed at him for any reason. But his ire was up. He stared the irritating teen down. Asher met his gaze and once again pressed the button on the angle grinder he held. It let out that same, high-pitched whine as he pushed it against the wall of the garage.

“Dude! What the fuck is wrong with you? Get your paws off my dad’s stuff!” He leapt off the stage and barreled through the crowd, knocking people out of the way to get to the crazy Brit. As soon as he could, he ripped the plug out of the wall, and the machine ground to a halt.

“You fuck! Making a noise like that while I’m singing? That’s just so fucked up, man.And for fuck’s sake, you’ve damaged the wall! Course, you snobby Brits think you’re just too damn good to sit here and listen to us angsty Americans, aren’t ya.” He glanced over his shoulder. “Sorry, Daisy, I didn’t mean you.” Shaking his head, he growled. “What the hell are you even doin’ here?”

Another hot one here in ye olde Midwest…after a long stretch of lovely weather that would make autumn jealous. Now summer has made her return…she can leave anytime now. I”m not a fan of heat and humidity, or any combo thereof.

Kitties are all good, all four of them. Yup, we have another one, and this is it. My allergies are already making me look like Rocky Balboa after a fight. Oyyyy. Love is all around them though as I’ve gone from zero lap cats to now three. 🙂

This week I skipped a little ahead so we get to a scene of Erik and Asher (somewhat) so a little longer of a snippet.

Here’s my snippet for the week:

Erik grabbed the microphone. Joey finished his intro, and Billy chimed in with a cymbal crash. Daisy didn’t miss a beat, and Erik began to sing.

When the harmony finished its bar, Erik glanced up to find the pale kid in the back staring him down like the grim reaper. What the hell is that guy’s problem? It’s like the gaze of death over there. Whatever. He shut his eyes and forced the image out of his mind—music was all that mattered. As the lyrics slowly left his throat, another sound interrupted his flow. He spun, assuming the god-awful shriek had come from one of the instruments.

“Dude. What the fuck?”

Joey and Billy both shook their heads, as baffled as he was, but Daisy seemed near tears. She shuffled her feet, making her vintage violet and green dress shift with her.

“Dammit.”

Erik touched her arm. “What is it, Daisy?” She pointed to the pale kid and made a fist at him. “It’s my brother. He’s playing with your toys.”

Rainbow Snippets August 16th, 2020

Tis a lovely sunny (but humid) Sunday here in the Midwest. My elder kitty keep guard at the window whilst the youngins sleep off a morning (and night) of play. Hubby is off saving the world from long grass.

So, this week I was at the physical workplace all day but one…had to get girl kitten her pill for a tapeworm (which she’d spat out in hubby’s face on home attempt) so let the nurses give it a try. 🙂 It’s alright there actually; the connection is much faster and the music was streaming through my headphones all day long.

Now to get homework done and (yes…I waited til the last day yet again)…and prepped for another week of fun. There’s a new sheriff in town, and I meet him tomorrow. O boy.

But there was a new face in the crowd tonight, one that made him grimace. It was Asher or Ashen—or was it Dasher or Dancer? Whatever his name was, Erik didn’t care, he just knew this UK emo was gonna be trouble.

He’d only met the freak once, when he’d dropped Daisy off for practice. Unbelievably, he was her brother—twin, no less. They couldn’t have been more different. He wasn’t even sure what the guy was doing hanging in the garage with them, unless he was trying to be a decent brother to Daisy. It didn’t matter—there was music to be played, and at least they had some spectators.

Hello again one and all! So sorry for the absenteeism last week, but I like to burn the candle at both ends these days. Okay, maybe one of those is labeled ‘procrastination’ in big, bold type with flourishes and a candy scent…but that’s just one opinion 🙂

I’m back in the swing of things at last after Jack’s brush with death. All three kitties are doing just fine, thank goodness! Hubby is good too, and so that means…cue the music…it’s time for change! I go back to work tomorrow. In the building 😦 A building I dislike intensely with people I feel about the same way as the building itself. Oyyyy. Whyyyyyyy?

Therefore, today hubby and I are working out buns off so that tonight we can do what we enjoy the most (get your minds out of the collective gutter)…ok just for that I won’t mention what we enjoy. 🙂 hehe. Long story short, I have a homework assignment that’s due, and I had alllll week to do it. It’s due today. Guess when I”m doing it? Today. At least it’s not three hours before it’s due…that’s really crazy, right? (backs away slowly)…

He cracked his knuckles and flipped his unwashed, messy blond hair over the short sleeves of his tattered red plaid shirt. He puffed air into his hands to exorcise the nerves he’d never admit to having.

Erik cleared his throat and gazed over the spectators—what he called their groupies. Possibly crowd was a bit of a euphemism, but hey, they had to start somewhere, and the fans were dedicated. Some Billy had introduced to him, like his friend Vince, who gave new meaning to bland. Then there was another kid, Sheri, who emulated Daisy’s style of vintage glam. But there was a new face in the crowd tonight, one that made him grimace. It was Asher or Ashen—or was it Dasher or Dancer? Recovering from a particularly stressful weekend…my beloved cat, Jack very nearly died. We snatched him back from the grasp of the grim reaper just in the tick of time, thank goodness! He was in seizure, wobbly, and hissing at both of us (Jack doesn’t hiss). So, two-and-a-half days of vet visits later and rather high bills, three new meds, and a cranky cat, he is home with us again. Thank goodness! He burned up one of those nine lives for sure.

Ironically, it was our new kitten, the girl, who picked up on it. She’d just met him face to face for the first time that night. She puffed herself up and put on a show but when she saw his condition, she simmered down and approached him, touching his nose. Awwww…

Otherwise, my only joys of the weekend have been playing with the kittens, a bit of drumming, and finally some gaming.

Their hook? They were trying to revive grunge.

After taking in his ragtag troupe from the makeshift stage, Erik surveyed the room and checked his reflection in the mirror that hung at the opposite end of the garage. He shuffled his feet, his new combat boots squeaking slightly as he broke them in. As he shifted his tall, muscular body, his ratty black jeans—two sizes too big for his six-foot-three frame—slipped low on his narrow hips. His chain wallet belt added a hindrance when the thick, heavy chain pelted his leg. He cracked his knuckles and flipped his unwashed, messy blond hair over the short sleeves of his tattered red plaid shirt. He puffed air into his hands to exorcise the nerves he’d never admit to having.

Happy Sunday one and all! So sorry I missed last week but it’s been a wild one around here for my hubby and I. We’ve expanded our family by two adorable kittens that take up a lot of time and energy! They are both rescues and just getting them to the house and settled was a major undertaking; not to mention the vet visits, setting up ‘base camp’ and trying to keep Jack’s keen senses dulled to their fluffiness just yet.

It should be no surprise that one of the kittens is a boy and his name is Billy 🙂 My co-author would roll her eyes at me. I do tend to fall in love with my characters of course. Vince and Erik I adore, but there’s something special about the red-haired drummer that’s captured my heart.

Now if only my adoration of Vince could inspire me to cook better….ah well.

That was one thing about living in the St. Louis ‘burbs. There were plenty of spots with woods in the back where only the random squirrel could bother them.

Having joined his bandmates, Erik took to the stage and spoke into the microphone the time-honored phrase, “Testing, one, two, three.” He proudly surveyed the room, grinned at the small crowd of groupies, and then glanced over his shoulder at his bandmates.

The Von was an awesome band, even if he did say so himself. Joey, a good-looking if a bit nerdy boy of seventeen—half a year younger than Erik—stood ready on the bass, Erik’s best friend, Billy, sat back behind the drums, and Joey’s new girlfriend, Daisy, was hot as hell as she teased some sic riffs from a rather battered lead guitar. Their hook? They were trying to revive grunge.

So, did everyone sleep well after the assaults on our ear drums last night? Ha ha. My neighborhood had plenty of fun with fireworks next door! They were setting them off like mad and wow were they loud! I should’ve hopped on the kit and joined them with a cymbal crash to join them each time!

This week’s post is different for me; it’s time to divulge why I took up the drum kit. First and foremost…I wanted to take up an instrument. Why not? Secondly, and this is author life crosses into her character world…my boy Billy…the drummer. I adore him. Completely. However, I realized I knew nada about music and drums and the whole world of rock music in general or bands…so as a researcher I dove into the learning of his instrument and fell in love with it myself. Art imitates life and inspires the author herself!

Now if only my adoration of Vince could inspire me to cook better….ah well.

The April weather was perfect. A beautiful Saturday afternoon, with white clouds streaked across a pale-blue sky, washed clean by the spring showers of the night before. Erik Von Nordgren paused to take a deep breath, fresh with ozone, before heading toward his parents’ three-car garage. Since the weather had improved, his band had been consigned to the garage on the basis that now they wouldn’t freeze there was no reason for his parents to suffer the falling plaster in the basement when the band could be as loud as they wanted outside.

Erik was proud of his home. The house itself was two stories high and freshly sided. The quiet cul-de-sac made it the ideal location for their practice. That was one thing about living in the St. Louis ‘burbs. There were plenty of spots with woods in the back where only the random squirrel could bother them.

Don’t spit in my drink!

An EXCERPT from ICE FAIRY by S. L. Danielson

So many people thought that they were an item, but nothing could be further from the truth. They were the best of pals, on and off the ice, but that was all. Sam’s heart lay along a different destiny, one which his parents did not know about, nor his coach. It was hell not being able to tell them he was gay; not even in a sport where a few of the other boys were as well, but he dared not speak about it. He’d found solace in Amber being the only one to know, and it was enough for him. At least for now. A gentle whack was felt on his arm and he turned to see Amber grinning at him. “Buy you a soda if you want. I don’t have an apple for the teacher.”

He rolled his eyes. “Oh, no thanks. I’m good. I’ve got my water bottle over there. Too much soda will keep me up too late and give me cavities. Can’t have that.”

“Oh, heavens no,” she agreed and after a quick push-off on her blade, she was gone.

Sam let out a deep sigh. It’d been quite the January afternoon with Amber there. Just the two of them… and the few dozen other skaters who fought their way around the oval like they were on a cold treadmill. The oval was never enough for him; he had to do more.

A sudden wave of boisterous voices broke his silent reverie as he nearly slipped from the prep for a scratch spin.  Oh shit, he thought as he saw what they were wearing. It was the hockey players… what he called the ‘demons’ of the ice. They left ruts so deep he’d requested the Zamboni nearly scrap the surface down to the base. He dug his toe pick in, fists balled, and snatched his water bottle from the top of the wall before the rude, crude boys could make their way over to it and knock it over, or maybe spit in it.

You won’t touch my bottle, oh hell no. Why did they have to share the ice with these assholes? Why couldn’t they have an entire rink devoted the athleticism and beauty of figure skating and not the boorish, blood sport show that hockey was. What was the whole point of it anyway? To see how many fist fights one could get into in a single game? Sam shuddered at the thought. He’d seen these games in action and the teeth flying out of their mouths. No thanks.

As the boys passed by, a few called out to him as he stood by the wall and drank his water; he retreated the closer they came. “Takin’ a break, Sammy boy? I’m sure that’s such hard work, huh?” One of the boys started harassing Sam. He looked over his shoulder at his chuckling brethren.

Sam didn’t respond but continued drinking. He wished they’d just go away and leave him alone.

“Hey, where’s your hottie, Sammy?” another asked, obviously referring to Amber. He wanted to reply, but why give them what they wanted by responding?

After most of the line passed, carrying their enormous overstuffed bags and spitting randomly into the seating area, Sam glanced up and saw someone he kinda knew, unfortunately. It was that big kid, Brett Z…something. He could never remember last names of the people who got on his nerves. His parents had worked with him to remember names, but he still had a tough time with it. Like now.

As the tall, built blond passed by, Sam caught his eye briefly – that was a mistake. Brett stiffened and shot him a look back. “What the fuck are you lookin’ at, ice fairy boy? You just go about your little twirls and shit. This is a man’s sport.” He held up his bag and slapped it, fairly snarling like a grizzly bear afterwards.
