Rainbow Snippets October 25th, 2020

Six days to go until Halloween…is it possible? This year will be completely different…who’s doing the costumes and trick-or-treating by slingshot?

Time marches one for us. Our anniversary is in a smidgen of days and as a true testament to lack of time, I chose, bought, and wrapped both gifts. Wow. Maybe next year we can put more time and effort on both sides.

As for the story, let’s continue with this first memorable interaction of Erik and Asher and the aftermath of their first kiss.

Here’s my snippet for the week:

What is Rainbow Snippets? It’s a group of LGBT+ authors who post six sentences (or more) from a current WIP, published work or even something they’ve read that they want to rave about. Click on the link below the rainbow to be transported to a place of wonder where you will find tasters of everything from sweet romance, to hot and steamy, to fantasy and sci-fi.

I”m changing gears completely and going to a beloved co-authored work and a series of Upstaged. Written by myself and Cheryl Headford (Nephy to some) in 2012! Over the course of two years we wrote 12 books together! It was the most insane, wonderful time of my writing life! We hope you love the result. The first four books are published and up for sale at Extasy Press and on Amazon. Here is book #1. Upstaged: Opening Act

Blurb:

Wannabe singer and band front man Erik Von Nordgren hates snarky brit Asher Berkley with a passion. From the moment he turns up at practice with his twin sister Daisy, who is one of the band the two have hated each other.
Through a series of ‘tit for tat’ incidents they annoy, frustrate and exasperated each other. The die hard goth with purple eyes and the hard core rocker with dreams of the big time have nothing in common and no need to cross paths. Except to wind each other up.
Until the day that Erik throws Asher in the school pool, when everything begins to change. Erik is so far in closet he’s in Narnia and Asher has a dark past and trust issues that stand in the way of any relationship, let alone one with the brash American who hurts him every time they try to get together.
A relationship doomed from the start, or so you’d think.

Asher’s lips were so soft, not even the chill of his lip ring could take away from the searing heat of the kiss. Erik’s demeanor softened, and he uncurled his fist in Asher’s hand. Other parts of his anatomy stood up and took notice, too. He prayed nobody in the band saw that. Especially…well. No. No one was allowed to see.

All too soon the kiss ended, and Asher broke contact with a loud smacking sound. Erik stood in silence, his mind whirling while he retreated. His mouth opened and closed as he fought for words, but before he could utter any of them, Asher’s cool hand patted the side of his face in an almost patronizing manner, and with a cheeky wink he turned. Walking away, he called over his shoulder to his sister.

“I’m off, Dais. Can’t stand the boredom. Give me a ring when you’re ready to be picked up. Try not to die of excitement in my absence.”

Wow, this month is flying by fast! Halloween is less than two weeks away and I’ve already begun Christmas shopping…who else is hopping on the internet or making their shopping lists?

Erik’s lips hung open, his eyes wide when he saw his fist in Asher’s much smaller hand. His attention was caught and held by a surprisingly calm glare. Funny, he’d never noticed Asher had such weird eyes. Words escaped him as he fell into the scintillating beauty of the teen’s violet gaze. They were beautiful, haunting…and pained.

Erik paused, his breath taken hostage by the moment. A strangled cry escaped him when, in another blindingly unexpected turnaround, Asher kissed him. He wanted to pull away at first, especially since they had an audience, yet he didn’t. Some part of him wanted to stay. Asher’s lips were so soft, not even the chill of his lip ring could take away from the searing heat of the kiss. Erik’s demeanor softened, and he uncurled his fist in Asher’s hand. The colors of the season are happening in our yard and neighborhoods and I’m loving it! Autumn is my favorite time of year 🙂 Now to hope for one evening where hubby and I can huddle around our fireplace (which looks like a glorified trashcan) outside and enjoy the crisp air and a cup of hot cider.

How do you celebrate fall?

“Not as sorry as this sorry-looking excuse for a singer,” Asher drawled, lounging against the wall. Erik’s fingers itched. “More like a fifty-year-old karaoke warbler after a packet of Woodbines.”

“That’s it, you asshole. You’re goin’ down.” Erik threw his full weight behind a punch that would’ve halted a freight train. But something stopped him dead. He paused, shocked and amazed. Somehow this waif managed to halt him at full throttle. Not an easy feat.

Life is good. Kitties are crazy yet furry and sweet; Jack has a new sensor so we can read his glucose at our leisure now too. Work is fine, albeit a bit harsh on my neck, back, and eyes, but such is the life of an accountant. 😦 I miss writing and doing anything creative beyond drumming, but my life has become engrossed with school and cats 🙂

“I didn’t hear anyone whine. But I did hear something squeak. Was it you, little mouse? If I closed my eyes I could have imagined I heard a creaky old gate up there on the stage, swinging in the breeze.”

Rage coursed through Erik’s veins—his Viking heritage coming to the fore. He balled his hands into fists and fairly snorted, like a bull ready to gore the matador.

Fortunately, Daisy intervened. “Asher! Stop it right now or you’ll be sorry.”

“Dudes! Chill the fuck out,” Billy commanded from behind his drum set. Even Joey was pissed.

“Take a pill, Nordgren. Damn.” He put his arm around Daisy.

Again, I missed a week…life is tooo crazy! Our three kittens had their spay/neuter surgeries and I was playing nurse mommy to all of them, plus Jack, who already has enough medical issues for his own nurse. Sigh.

“Maybe if you can’t appreciate our music you should get your ass outta here, Dasher. Or is it Ghoulboy?” Erik laughed at his own wit but was disappointed when it didn’t seem to shake this guy one iota.

“Just because my sister wants to hang around with a bunch of losers, doesn’t mean they’re any good, only that she has really bad taste.”

Erik’s temper rose, his blood nearly to the boiling point. “Who the hell are you callin’ a loser, you…you…emo! Happy September to everyone! Sorry I missed last week, but Labor Day weekend went much too fast for us. Kitty #1 is having health issues again, so please keep him in your thoughts. Otherwise, work, school, and life have not slowed down, but we do what we can to keep each other sane.

Course, you snobby Brits think you’re just too damn good to sit here and listen to us angsty Americans, aren’t ya.” He glanced over his shoulder. “Sorry, Daisy, I didn’t mean you.” Shaking his head, he growled. “What the hell are you even doin’ here?”

“You gonna answer me or what, man?”

Asher held the grinder against the wall and made it whine again. It was beginning to make a groove. Asher shrugged, and Erik badly wanted to wipe the smug, insolent smile off his face.

“Maybe if the band was better I wouldn’t be so bored.” A blond brow went up as Erik crossed his arms tightly across his chest and harrumphed. “You sayin’ something about my band? The one your own sister is in?” He gritted his teeth and inched closer. “Maybe if you can’t appreciate our music you should get your ass outta here, Dasher. Who else has a tough time believing it’s the end of August? As I was working Friday I kept doing the mid-August files…and had to remind myself no, this is month-end! Crazy.

The kittens are all checked out and good. They are swatting and hissing amongst themselves now and we are just letting them fight it out (to an extent). Policing is exhausting and these are siblings…they just need to be reminded.

As for the story, let’s continue with this first memorable interaction of Erik and Asher.

Erik touched her arm. “What is it, Daisy?” She pointed to the pale kid and made a fist at him. “It’s my brother. He’s playing with your toys.”

She gave Asher a look like no other, one he hoped never to see aimed at him for any reason. But his ire was up. He stared the irritating teen down. Asher met his gaze and once again pressed the button on the angle grinder he held. It let out that same, high-pitched whine as he pushed it against the wall of the garage.

“Dude! What the fuck is wrong with you? Get your paws off my dad’s stuff!” He leapt off the stage and barreled through the crowd, knocking people out of the way to get to the crazy Brit. As soon as he could, he ripped the plug out of the wall, and the machine ground to a halt.

“You fuck! Making a noise like that while I’m singing? That’s just so fucked up, man.And for fuck’s sake, you’ve damaged the wall! Another hot one here in ye olde Midwest…after a long stretch of lovely weather that would make autumn jealous. Now summer has made her return…she can leave anytime now. I”m not a fan of heat and humidity, or any combo thereof.

Kitties are all good, all four of them. Yup, we have another one, and this is it. My allergies are already making me look like Rocky Balboa after a fight. Oyyyy. Love is all around them though as I’ve gone from zero lap cats to now three. 🙂

This week I skipped a little ahead so we get to a scene of Erik and Asher (somewhat) so a little longer of a snippet.

Erik grabbed the microphone. Joey finished his intro, and Billy chimed in with a cymbal crash. Daisy didn’t miss a beat, and Erik began to sing.

When the harmony finished its bar, Erik glanced up to find the pale kid in the back staring him down like the grim reaper. What the hell is that guy’s problem? It’s like the gaze of death over there. Whatever. He shut his eyes and forced the image out of his mind—music was all that mattered. As the lyrics slowly left his throat, another sound interrupted his flow. He spun, assuming the god-awful shriek had come from one of the instruments.

“Dude. What the fuck?”

Joey and Billy both shook their heads, as baffled as he was, but Daisy seemed near tears. She shuffled her feet, making her vintage violet and green dress shift with her.

“Dammit.”

Erik touched her arm. “What is it, Daisy?” She pointed to the pale kid and made a fist at him. “It’s my brother. He’s playing with your toys.”

Tis a lovely sunny (but humid) Sunday here in the Midwest. My elder kitty keep guard at the window whilst the youngins sleep off a morning (and night) of play. Hubby is off saving the world from long grass.

So, this week I was at the physical workplace all day but one…had to get girl kitten her pill for a tapeworm (which she’d spat out in hubby’s face on home attempt) so let the nurses give it a try. 🙂 It’s alright there actually; the connection is much faster and the music was streaming through my headphones all day long.

Now to get homework done and (yes…I waited til the last day yet again)…and prepped for another week of fun. There’s a new sheriff in town, and I meet him tomorrow. O boy.

But there was a new face in the crowd tonight, one that made him grimace. It was Asher or Ashen—or was it Dasher or Dancer? Whatever his name was, Erik didn’t care, he just knew this UK emo was gonna be trouble.

He’d only met the freak once, when he’d dropped Daisy off for practice. Unbelievably, he was her brother—twin, no less. They couldn’t have been more different. He wasn’t even sure what the guy was doing hanging in the garage with them, unless he was trying to be a decent brother to Daisy. It didn’t matter—there was music to be played, and at least they had some spectators.

Erik grabbed the microphone. Joey finished his intro, and Billy chimed in with a cymbal crash. Daisy didn’t miss a beat, and Erik began to sing.

Hello again one and all! So sorry for the absenteeism last week, but I like to burn the candle at both ends these days. Okay, maybe one of those is labeled ‘procrastination’ in big, bold type with flourishes and a candy scent…but that’s just one opinion 🙂

I’m back in the swing of things at last after Jack’s brush with death. All three kitties are doing just fine, thank goodness! Hubby is good too, and so that means…cue the music…it’s time for change! I go back to work tomorrow. In the building 😦 A building I dislike intensely with people I feel about the same way as the building itself. Oyyyy. Whyyyyyyy?

Therefore, today hubby and I are working out buns off so that tonight we can do what we enjoy the most (get your minds out of the collective gutter)…ok just for that I won’t mention what we enjoy. 🙂 hehe. Long story short, I have a homework assignment that’s due, and I had alllll week to do it. It’s due today. Guess when I”m doing it? Today. At least it’s not three hours before it’s due…that’s really crazy, right? (backs away slowly)…

He cracked his knuckles and flipped his unwashed, messy blond hair over the short sleeves of his tattered red plaid shirt. He puffed air into his hands to exorcise the nerves he’d never admit to having.

Erik cleared his throat and gazed over the spectators—what he called their groupies. Possibly crowd was a bit of a euphemism, but hey, they had to start somewhere, and the fans were dedicated. Some Billy had introduced to him, like his friend Vince, who gave new meaning to bland. Then there was another kid, Sheri, who emulated Daisy’s style of vintage glam. But there was a new face in the crowd tonight, one that made him grimace. It was Asher or Ashen—or was it Dasher or Dancer? Whatever his name was, Erik didn’t care, he just knew this UK emo was gonna be trouble.
