Rainbow Snippets April 27th

Today hubby and I are getting all of our household fun stuff done so we can enjoy tomorrow with my family. Fun times ahead 🙂 The weather is foul today but promises to clear at least somewhat tomorrow. What are your plans for the weekend?

What is Rainbow Snippets? It’s a group of LGBT+ authors who post six sentences (or more) from a current WIP, published work or even something they’ve read that they want to rave about. Click on the link below the rainbow to be transported to a place of wonder where you will find tasters of everything from sweet romance, to hot and steamy, to fantasy and sci-fi.

This week I’m posting from an up-n-coming re-release. Bernard, Diary of a 46-yr-old Bellhop has been transformed into Bernard’s Diary. I’ve set a release date of June 15th and will tease up to that date.

Blurb:

Bernard Covington, suicidal and not the most-handsome man in the world would be happy to leave the world behind altogether.  That is until he meets Dr. Jack Larson. The physician takes his wounded heart and soul and patches them back together, but is he Mr. Perfect?

Bernard and Jack develop a romance, but soon the tide begins to shift as Jack’s past is revealed and it becomes a game-changer for the couple to deal with.

Will Bernard and Jack have a happy ending or will he succumb to his desire to end it all or will dealing with Jack’s phantoms keep him going? Only Bernard’s diary knows what secrets lurk in his soul…

Bernard sat on his bed after another long day at the hotel just a few miles away. He was a bellhop. Not the most glamorous profession, but the only one he could get years ago when his life plans changed drastically. He raked his fingers through his thick salt-n-pepper hair and yawned wide. He reached down and opened up his nightstand drawer and pulled out his journal. He flipped to an open page and plucked off the pen that was attached to the outside and clicked the point down.

Rainbow Snippets April 20th

Today we have a visitor coming to the house to help celebrate Easter 🙂 (no, not the Easter Bunny) but my bud from out-of-state. I’m posting now and then will be occupied the rest of the weekend. What are your plans for the weekend?

What is Rainbow Snippets? It’s a group of LGBT+ authors who post six sentences (or more) from a current WIP, published work or even something they’ve read that they want to rave about. Again this week I’m posting from one of my first books: For the Heart of Phillip.  First written in 2006 and redone into it’s current format in 2010. We start at Chapter 2 where Phillip meets Andrew. This is a muuuch longer snippet but I wanted to get their first conversation on the bus in.

Blurb: Get ready for a wild, sexy ride! Follow along 13 arduous, confusing, wonderful years of Phillip’s life as he tries to decide on his love for two men. Phillip is socially awkward, depressed, a big guy for his age, and finds making friends difficult. Luckily, he meets Andy, who is two years younger than he is. They are best friends and together all the time. On a family vacation when he’s 16, Phillip meets Robert and the two form a fledgling relationship. All is great until Phillip comes homes and finds out a secret that Andrew had hidden for years; that he wants to be Phillip’s man and to dump Robert. Hence begins a push and pull, back and forth for years to come as the two fight over the man they love, Phillip. Both men will stop at nothing to keep him. Who will win the heart of Phillip? Come along for this ride and find out!

“How old are they?”

“Aidan is eight, and Anna is seven. Do you have any brothers or sisters?”

“Yeah, I have a way older brother, his name is Amin. Mom and Dad adopted him when he was about my age. He’s at college now.”

“Oh cool! Do you get along?”

“Yeah! He’s a great brother. He used to help me with stuff before he went away. Mom and Dad are always busy doing whatever. How about your parents?”

“Dad’s gone a lot, but Mom stays home and does all the cooking and cleaning and takes us everywhere. I can’t wait ‘til I’m old enough to drive. Maybe my dad will get me a ‘Vette.”

Andy smiled. “Maybe. Hey, does your family like to barbecue and just chill out together?”

Phillip nodded. “Yeah, I’d say so. We like to eat, that’s for sure, as you can probably tell.” He looked down at his stomach and rubbed it a bit.

Andy shrugged. “So what, you’re kinda big. You’re still growing. My mom says I’m scrawny right now, but I’ll grow out of it someday.”

Phillip sported a curious look. “How old are you, Andy?”

“I’m almost 10, but not for another month yet. How old are you?”

“12, almost a teenager. I will be in March.”

The bus slowed down and stopped its motion. Phillip gathered his backpack.

“Time for school. Oh fun.”

“Yeah. Not.” Andy jibed. They stood up and walked out of the bus together. Phillip looked back at his bus mate. “See ya later, Andy.”

“See ya!” Andy ran off, but took one last glance at the teen as they parted for the day.  Phillip walked towards the doors. His mind was full of good thoughts for once. “Damn, I think I might’ve made a friend for once.” He smiled to himself. Tonight he could finally tell his parents some good news for a change.

Andy laughed. He smiled again. “Well, what kind of stuff?”

“Well, there’s a big park near here, and the mall, of course. I think they’re trying to build a water park, but I don’t know much about it. My parents keep track of that stuff.”

Andy nodded. “Cool, well, maybe it’s not a total bore. What do you do for fun?”

“Oh, I usually just play video games.  A lot. I have a little brother and sister, too, and I play with them.”

Rainbow Snippets April 6th

Tis a lovely weekend started here and I’m up and moving around. 🙂 I’m playing hubby’s nurse again, but that’s minimal this time around. Therefore, down to work for me on this lovely Saturday.

The old woman driver, Shirley, shot the boy a glance. “Gotta sit down, hon. Gotta get this bus to school,” she told him in a friendly manner.

Phillip shut his eyes and looked back at the youngster. “Hey, if you wanna sit with me, you can,” he blurted out.

The boy’s face turned to look at him and beamed. He sat down next to the teen. “Thanks.”

“Sure.”

The driver smiled, shut the doors, and they rode the rest of the way in silence.

The boys spent the rest of the week sitting next to each other in silence. On Friday morning, Phillip finally worked up some nerve.

“Hey, what’s your name?”

The boy smiled at him quickly. “Andy Bradley-Horner. What’s your name?”

Phillip grinned. “I’m Phillip Marnier. You new in town?”

“Yeah, my parents just moved here. How about you?”

“No, I’ve lived here since I was a baby,” Phillip replied. “It’s an ok town. Not too much to do, but we have some stuff at least. It’s not a total drag.”

Rainbow Snippets March 30th

The weather is rainy and the mood is a bit dreary, at least outdoors. Indoors it’s nice 🙂 Kitty is better (been battling all week with his meds) and hubby is being a bit of a pain listening to annoying videos whilst I work. Sighhhh. The price of family. LOL At least I’m rested, awake, and ready to enjoy the weekend.

Monday morning arrived and Phillip headed off to school again. He boarded the bus and as usual, sat right behind the driver, alone. They rode down their usual path and made one additional stop. A new boy climbed aboard, someone he’d never seen before. Phillip looked up at the new passenger and they made eye contact. The boy was younger than Phillip, had very large dark brown eyes, a tiny face, and an equally small body. Phillip swore the boy almost smiled, but dismissed it. The bus was full, with only one seat left.  Right behind the driver.  Right next to Phillip.

Dani’s face flushed for a moment and a few tears escaped. She reached out for her son and took him in her tiny arms. They hugged for a long moment. Her hair tickled his nose.  He had to turn and spit a bit.

“Geez, mom, back off on the hairspray a bit, huh?” he said jokingly.

They laughed together.

“Ha ha. Ok, my dear son, I won’t force you on to any teams. But you’ve got to do something soon! You have no friends at all outside this house. I want you to really try to find a friend. Can you do that at least?”

Phillip sighed. “I guess so. Most of the kids just look at me and laugh though; they don’t even give me a chance to talk. I sit alone at lunch or go outside and hide by a tree. Not that I could hide much, mind ya.” He ran his hand over his bulging abdomen. “I look like a pregnant man. I wish that would go away. I wanna grow up and be someone people have to listen to, like a cop or something.”

Dani chuckled. “Well, you could exercise, and before you say it, I don’t mean outside. I mean in here. Go down to the basement and do a workout tape or something. We could get you a treadmill or exercise bike, too. I’ll even keep your brother and sister out of your hair.”

He curled his lip in thought. “That could work, I suppose. I’ll work on it.”

“Good boy.” Dani tousled his hair and kissed his cheek. “Ok, I know it’s killing you to be here. Go on back to your room and play those games you love so much.” Phillip smiled. “Thanks, mom!” he took off down the hall to his room. Dani rolled her eyes and shook her head. “Kids!”

Phillip groaned. “Yes, I’ve been taking it. It doesn’t really help me anymore. I’ve been on it since I was 10. I think I’m gonna need something a lot stronger, especially dealing with middle school.”

His mother put her hands on his broad shoulders. “I’m sorry, honey. I really am. I wish there was more we could do for you. We’ve been dealing with this for so long. Dr. Melville told us a long time ago it would get worse for you around this age. I don’t know what to do anymore. I’m at a loss! Your dad and I love you so much, but I think we need to get a bit more drastic with your treatments.”

Phillip’s eyes widened. “Drastic? How? Shock therapy?”

Dani twisted her lip. “No, Mr. Funny man, but maybe have you join a club or a team, or something.” Phillip backed away from her. “How many times have I told you I’m no good at sports?” he said in an exasperated tone. “I sucked at soccer and Little League, swimming, everything! Please don’t make me join another team now; they’ll just laugh at me again. Please, Mom?” His large, pale blue eyes looked into hers. “Don’t make me do it, I can’t, I just can’t!” he begged. They both fell silent.

Dani turned around and straightened her ankle-length bright pink dress. She pursed her matching painted lips and rolled her sky blue eyes. Her ornamental fingernails reached for a tendril of her curly brown hair to twirl, a clear sign she was agitated. This wasn’t the first time they’d had this argument. Giving him a glare, she pitched her hair back into place and put her hands on her low hips. She walked over and tilted her head up to look her son in the eye. Dani was a petite 5’5” to her son’s towering height of 6’0”.

With a maternal once-over of her son, Dani saw how just upset he was and understood his emotional state. She brushed his chubby, pale cheek with her fingers.

“All right, you get off this time, but the next time it’s a beautiful day, you are getting some natural Vitamin D, understand? You can’t keep hiding like this. The doctor said-”

Phillip interrupted. “Dr. Melville said that I’m bipolar and an isolationist! How can I fight what I am, Mom?”

Dani scowled and pointed a painted nail at him. “Don’t cut me off like that, young man. You’re still only 12 years old! You may be the size of a man, but you’re far from grown. Have you been taking your Prozac?”

She turned away from her cooking and gave him a stern look.

“Phillip! I told you to get some fresh air!” The teen tried to gather himself together, but found it difficult. “I tried to, but I almost got stung by a bumblebee out there, and that Marla girl was out there with her friend. I just wasn’t meant to be an outdoor person, Mom. I’m sorry.”

He knew them from school. The older one was Marla Simpson, the meanest girl in the neighborhood. She was 13, skinny as a rail, and had white blond hair. She was dressed in a very provocative outfit for someone of her age; micro-short white shorts and a white halter top. Phillip didn’t find her at all attractive and wished she’d cover up. Her friend was only 10 and dressed in a short, rainbow-colored dress. Phillip recognized her as Rachel Tucker, one of the popular girls at school. Alone, either of the girls was trouble, but together, they were unbearable. They crossed the street with their bikes and stopped right in front of his house. Phillip turned to go back inside, but the girls were too quick for him.

“Poor fatty Phillip, he’s afraid of bees!” Marla jibed in the most condescending tone he’d ever heard.  She whispered something to Rachel and they both pretended to gag at the sight of him, and took off on their bikes.

Phillip tried to brush them off, but couldn’t. He watched them until they were out of sight. “Bitches,” he said out loud; too late. He felt tears behind his light blue eyes, but dared not let them escape. Turning on his heel, Phillip ran up the porch stairs, and into his house. The hot, humid air followed him into the kitchen and caught his mother’s attention.
