Rainbow Snippets April 20th

Today we have a visitor coming to the house to help celebrate Easter 🙂 (no, not the Easter Bunny) but my bud from out-of-state. I’m posting now and then will be occupied the rest of the weekend. What are your plans for the weekend?

What is Rainbow Snippets? It’s a group of LGBT+ authors who post six sentences (or more) from a current WIP, published work or even something they’ve read that they want to rave about. Click on the link below the rainbow to be transported to a place of wonder where you will find tasters of everything from sweet romance, to hot and steamy, to fantasy and sci-fi.

Again this week I’m posting from one of my first books: For the Heart of Phillip.  First written in 2006 and redone into it’s current format in 2010. We start at Chapter 2 where Phillip meets Andrew. This is a muuuch longer snippet but I wanted to get their first conversation on the bus in.

Blurb: Get ready for a wild, sexy ride! Follow along 13 arduous, confusing, wonderful years of Phillip’s life as he tries to decide on his love for two men. Phillip is socially awkward, depressed, a big guy for his age, and finds making friends difficult. Luckily, he meets Andy, who is two years younger than he is. They are best friends and together all the time. On a family vacation when he’s 16, Phillip meets Robert and the two form a fledgling relationship. All is great until Phillip comes homes and finds out a secret that Andrew had hidden for years; that he wants to be Phillip’s man and to dump Robert. Hence begins a push and pull, back and forth for years to come as the two fight over the man they love, Phillip. Both men will stop at nothing to keep him. Who will win the heart of Phillip? Come along for this ride and find out!

“How old are they?”

“Aidan is eight, and Anna is seven. Do you have any brothers or sisters?”

“Yeah, I have a way older brother, his name is Amin. Mom and Dad adopted him when he was about my age. He’s at college now.”

“Oh cool! Do you get along?”

“Yeah! He’s a great brother. He used to help me with stuff before he went away. Mom and Dad are always busy doing whatever. How about your parents?”

“Dad’s gone a lot, but Mom stays home and does all the cooking and cleaning and takes us everywhere. I can’t wait ‘til I’m old enough to drive. Maybe my dad will get me a ‘Vette.”

Andy smiled. “Maybe. Hey, does your family like to barbecue and just chill out together?”

Phillip nodded. “Yeah, I’d say so. We like to eat, that’s for sure, as you can probably tell.” He looked down at his stomach and rubbed it a bit.

Andy shrugged. “So what, you’re kinda big. You’re still growing. My mom says I’m scrawny right now, but I’ll grow out of it someday.”

Phillip sported a curious look. “How old are you, Andy?”

“I’m almost 10, but not for another month yet. How old are you?”

“12, almost a teenager. I will be in March.”

The bus slowed down and stopped its motion. Phillip gathered his backpack.

“Time for school. Oh fun.”

“Yeah. Not.” Andy jibed. They stood up and walked out of the bus together. Phillip looked back at his bus mate. “See ya later, Andy.”

“See ya!” Andy ran off, but took one last glance at the teen as they parted for the day.  Phillip walked towards the doors. His mind was full of good thoughts for once. “Damn, I think I might’ve made a friend for once.” He smiled to himself. Tonight he could finally tell his parents some good news for a change.

Cats and Toys

Does your kitty love to play? Mine does…once in a while. He’s 15 years-old now and not much of an appetite for crazy playtimes. Once in a while though, he can surprise me.

These are one of his favorite toys:

I’ll bounce them on the floor and he’ll leap into the air and scurry after them…a heartwarming and jovial site for my big boy.

What are some of your kitty’s favorites? I found Jack’s toys at chewy.com:

Andy laughed. He smiled again. “Well, what kind of stuff?”

“Well, there’s a big park near here, and the mall, of course. I think they’re trying to build a water park, but I don’t know much about it. My parents keep track of that stuff.”

Andy nodded. “Cool, well, maybe it’s not a total bore. What do you do for fun?”

“Oh, I usually just play video games.  A lot. I have a little brother and sister, too, and I play with them.”

A Non-Overwhelming Writing Routine To Gain Control Of Your Endless To-Do List

Terrific post 🙂 I’m printing out the calendar as my sample to work by.

K.M. Allan

Writing is one of those activities where, no matter if you do it full time or crammed into lunch breaks, there’s a never-ending to-do list attached.

You’ve got to fill in plot holes, plan character arcs, script whole conversations, research how to poison people without drawing the attention of authorities, and then find the time to put words into sentences that sound good and have a little magic to them.

Being organized helps, but even the best planner in the world can get overwhelmed when the to-do list feels endless.

Recently I’ve felt this way; realizing I have so much to do and being overwhelmed by it. It seemed easier to put the writing off—but spoiler alert—binge-watching The Umbrella Academy makes zero progress towards my own writing goals (who knew, right?).

Getting organized is one way to get back on track. A writing routine is another. An organized writing routine…

Rainbow Snippets April 6th

Tis a lovely weekend started here and I’m up and moving around. 🙂 I’m playing hubby’s nurse again, but that’s minimal this time around. Therefore, down to work for me on this lovely Saturday.

The old woman driver, Shirley, shot the boy a glance. “Gotta sit down, hon. Gotta get this bus to school,” she told him in a friendly manner.

Phillip shut his eyes and looked back at the youngster. “Hey, if you wanna sit with me, you can,” he blurted out.

The boy’s face turned to look at him and beamed. He sat down next to the teen. “Thanks.”

“Sure.”

The driver smiled, shut the doors, and they rode the rest of the way in silence.

The boys spent the rest of the week sitting next to each other in silence. On Friday morning, Phillip finally worked up some nerve.

“Hey, what’s your name?”

The boy smiled at him quickly. “Andy Bradley-Horner. What’s your name?”

Phillip grinned. “I’m Phillip Marnier. You new in town?”

“Yeah, my parents just moved here. How about you?”

“No, I’ve lived here since I was a baby,” Phillip replied. “It’s an ok town. Not too much to do, but we have some stuff at least. It’s not a total drag.”
